  • What will I learn in this workshop?

    You will develop more clarity & understanding about what trauma is & is not as well as the ability to recognize basic signs & behaviors of trauma in yourself & in others. Understand how to recognize the healthy “discharge” of trauma that can arise with yogic practices and be able to avoid common mis-steps yoga teachers make when working with trauma-affected students. You will also come away with practical “do”s & “don’ts” in your class for a trauma-sensitive approach and also connect with the inner & outer tools you already have to support those in need. You will leave being more confidence in your Yoga classroom & in handling trauma-sensitive students.

  • Who is this workshop for?

    This workshop is for you if you teach Yoga (experienced/novice), work with populations at high risk of trauma, can commit time & energy to six sessions of 2 hrs each + 30 min of homework/week, are ready to open your mind & heart, take notes, ask questions & participate, and are prepared to practice revolutionary selfcare during the course!

  • What this workshop is not!

    This workshop is not training to become a trauma therapist. It is not a group or personal counseling session. Furthermore this is not an academic workshop (i.e. it is not graded; not. heavy in theory). This is not a drop-in course: attendance at all six sessions is expected

  • What if I am not a yoga teacher?

    Although the workshop content is designed for Yoga instructors, it can be valuable to yoga practitioners as well. Yoga practitioners are welcome to join.

  • I am unable to attend the live sessions. Will the workshop be recorded for later self-study?

    As this workshop is designed to be interactive, it will not be recorded. Also, because of the nature of the work, and the aim of learning how connection can heal trauma, having live eyes/ears/voices is part of the practice & learning.

  • Can I receive Continuing Education Hours for Yoga Alliance?

    Participants interested in submitting their workshop hours with Yogatara for continuing education credits may use following information to support their application: Yogatara holds a Master Degree in Transpersonal Psychology (2010) from I.T.P California, a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Yogic Sciences (2005) from the Bihar Yoga University, India and is a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (2018) from the Somatic Experiencing Training Institute (SETI) in Colorado. All of these disciplines require extensive study, consultation hours & practice. Yogatara has been teaching Yoga since 2007, to both individuals and groups and has led over 40 residential Yoga retreats in Nepal. She is a designated counselor by the US Embassy Nepal’s Medical Unit, who has both retained and referred her to provide Yoga & Trauma therapy to the expatriate community. Since 2015 Yogatara has worked as a Holistic Wellness Consultant for larger organizations & corporations in Nepal to bring Yoga and Trauma education to a wider public.

As a yoga instructor….

  • Curious to know why those body spasms in shavasana, Yoga Nidra or deep relaxation are more often than not a good thing?
  • Are you ready to better understand how to regulate yourself & help others at the same time?

The truth is that trauma is a part of life. 
 

That means that 99% of your Yoga students will have experienced a traumatic event. However, not all of them will be traumatized by it. And many of those who are traumatized will not even know that they are. When they come to Yoga they are often amazed by what they experience through it. 

 
Why is that?  
How does that happen?  
 
Given how universal trauma is, as Yoga instructors, what do we need to be aware of? What is our role? 

 

In this 6-part workshop you’ll learn about the basics of trauma, including what it is and is not, and how it affects our body, brain & behaviour. You’ll also begin to understand how & why Yogic practices & a Yoga classroom can help to manage and support healing the effects of trauma. 

You’ll come out this workshop able to make more informed decisions about how to make your classroom set-up & practices more supportive & transformative for yourself & all of your students.  

This workshop is designed to be informative & interactive. It draws on contemporary research & therapeutic approaches to trauma as well as on the Yogic sciences. Be prepared for a combination of theory, discussion & simple homework that will help you immediately apply workshop take-aways in your classroom & personal life.

About this workshop

Instructor

Yogatara

Yogatara (MTP/S.E.P) is the director of the Isha Institute, in Patan, Nepal. She spends her time as a Yoga practitioner, instructor, retreat leader & holistic therapist with a specialisation in trauma therapy. She has a diploma in Applied Yogic Science from BYU, a Masters in Transpersonal Psychology and is a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP). Yogatara loves the work she does & is passionate about sharing & learning with others worldwide. She currently serves on the YANA Board.
